| Open Letter To President George W. Bush. By Pierre A. Maroun The tragic attack on New York City, which claimed the lives of thousands of innocent people, split the world into two camps. There are those countries that believe the United States to be the “Greatest Satan” that must be destroyed, and those who believe it to be the defender of democracy, freedom of religions, and coexistence. On the other side of the Atlantic is a tiny country—Lebanon—historically known as the land of freedom and the sanctuary of oppressed minorities. Unfortunately, after decades of defending its democracy, Lebanon has fallen captive to terrorists. Syria, known for sponsoring terrorism, and human rights abuse, has hijacked its free will to make decisions. Mr. President, it is crucial that we work together to help Lebanon regain its freedom, sovereignty, and independence. To achieve this task, Syria must abide by the international law and withdraw from Lebanon in accordance with U.N. Resolution 520. Syria must also be held accountable for human rights violation in Lebanon. These include its torture of innocent Lebanese civilians; its use of Lebanon as a base for international terrorism; and its production of drugs in Lebanon’s Biqa Valley, which end up on American streets. President Bush, in a world where democracy and freedom of expression are threatened by barbaric suicide bombers claiming to kill in the name of God, the free world must cooperate and stand together to combat terrorism and preserve democracy. The free Lebanese share our values and beliefs and are still the faithful defenders of democracy and freedom. They are willing to provide the necessary help to win the war on terrorism. Dear President, at a time when democracy is sinking in the quick sand of the Middle East, any helping hand is a great one. Beware of alienating our natural allies, in an attempt to befriend our enemies. The Lebanese people share our values and our love of freedom and democracy. It is our duty to stick together! Pierre A.
