New York September 24, 2004
A delegation from the American Lebanese Coalition (ALC) visited the United Nations Secretariat in New York and met with the Secretary General
assistant Mr. Mark Quarterman and Mr. Markus Bouillon assistant to Mr. Terje Roed-Larsen.
The delegation and UN officials discussed the up coming October 3rd due date for the Secretary General report on UN resolution 1559 to the UN
Security Council. Members of the ALC delegation requested that the report be consistent with reality on the ground in Lebanon and not be
politically correct in order to respond to the objections of the Lebanese and Syrian regimes regarding the resolution. Mr. Quarterman was clear
that the report would respond specifically to the Security Council requests put forth in UN resolution 1559 and that any other attempt to associate
other issues to the resolution will be disregarded. The ALC presented the officials with documents from the Lebanese civil society stating
objections and uproar for the manipulation of the Lebanese constitution in order to serve personal objectives and the disregard of the mandate of
the United Nations resolution 1559 at a time when Lebanon is asking the United Nations regularly to implement other resolutions.
The French mission to the UN was next on the ALC delegation's schedule. At the French Mission Mr. Damien LORAS first secretary reiterated
France's position as to the implementation of resolution 1559. The French official was clear in stating that France unconditional support to the
resolution has one objective, which is to see a Free and sovereign Lebanon without any foreign intervention in its internal affairs. The ALC
delegation thanked the French for co-sponsoring the resolution and relayed to the French government the appreciations of all the Lebanese
expatriates around the world for their historic and courageous stand on the Lebanese issue.
The ALC visited Chile's Ambassador Mr. Cristian Maquieira a current member of the Security Council and delivered the appreciations of the
Lebanese expatriates and the Lebanese people to the Chilean vote on UN resolution 1559. The delegation informed the Ambassador on the
latest development in Lebanon and the disregard of the UN mandate by the Lebanese parliament is due mostly to pressure and coercions, and
the objections of the Syrian regime regarding the withdrawal from Lebanon and justifying such occupation through bilateral agreement and
special relations signed between Lebanon and Syria when Syria does not formally recognize the independence of Lebanon by refusing to have
diplomatic representation since the independence of Lebanon in 1943.
Finally the American Lebanese Coalition members visited their mission, the US mission and met with US officials and discussed the latest
development regarding the UN resolution 1559. US officials are looking forward to receiving the Secretary General report and act accordingly. US
officials at all levels would like to see the UN resolution implemented immediately and put closure to the interference of Syria in Lebanon internal
affairs and the complete withdrawal of Syrian forces from Lebanon as well as the dismantling of all armed militias and assign security and defense
to the Lebanese army and security forces throughout the country.
The ALC is moving to contact all members of the Security Council those who voted in favor and those who abstained in order to keep the
Lebanese issue as a priority on the Security Council agenda.
The ALC delegations members were Mr. Tom Harb ALC VP for Government relations, Mr. Joseph Hage ALC VP for Media and Public Relations,
Mr. Fadi Barek USA Secretary General WLCU-USA and Mr. Fadi Farhat ALC representative in New York and Representative to the ALC president
Dr. Joseph Gebeily.
