The American Lebanese Coalition strongly condemns the assassination of the former Lebanese Prime
Minister Rafiq Hariri. This cowardly attack is the latest in a series of similar assassinations starting with
MP Kamal Jumblat, President Bashir Gemayel, Mufti Hassan Khaled, President Rene Moawad, and
many others. The main aim of such terrorist crimes has been to terrorize the Lebanese people in order
to prevent them from regaining their long sought freedom, sovereignty, and independence.
This hideous crime is also clear evidence and a reminder that Lebanon remains an occupied country
with a coerced will, which is preventing its people from achieving unity and true national reconciliation.
ALC insists on holding the current Lebanese regime and its mentor the Syrian Ba’ath regime
responsible for the assassination of PM Hariri. Therefore:
1) We appeal to the international community through the United Nations Security Council to take the
necessary measures to liberate Lebanon and its people by enforcing the UNSCR 1559 immediately.
2) We request that the United Nations launch an independent inquiry into this crime to determine the
perpetrators.
3) We demand the immediate resignation of President Emile Lahoud and the cabinet of Omar Karami.
4) We insist on the complete and immediate withdrawal of the Syrian troops and the Ba’ath security
apparatus from the entire Lebanese territory.
ALC extends its sincere condolences to the Hariri’s family and to the families of the other victims, as well
as to the Lebanese people. We pray that God blesses the soul of every hero who died in defense
of Lebanon’s freedom and independence, and we stand steadfast besides those continuing to work on
liberating the Lebanese nation, so one day Lebanon can join again the free world.
