USAID Funds Business Plan for Water Establishment
On December 13-15, 2005, USAID funded two “Learn as You Do” sessions at the Beirut and Mount Lebanon Water Establishment
under the USAID-funded Lebanon Water Policy Program (LWPP). Conducted by Development Alternatives Inc. (DAI), the sessions
targeted seven senior managers at the Establishment to guide them in identifying the Establishment’s mission statement and
assessing the current challenges that the institution faces. The sessions constitute a step in the development of a five-year business
plan for the Water Establishment. The development of the business plan comes as a result of the success among water sector
stakeholders of the USAID-funded business plan previously developed for the South Lebanon Water Establishment.
Cooperative Launches New Website
USAID, in partnership with World Vision and BioCoop Lubnan, recently launched a website that can be accessed at www.
biocooplubnan.com. The website serves as an information tool on the main activities implemented under the USAID-funded program.
The program is helping BioCoop Lubnan become an independent cooperative capable of taking over activities and sustaining the
USAID-funded project with the support of public and private entities.
International College Undertakes Re-Accreditation Process
In November 2005, the International College (IC) began its re-accreditation process by hosting two visitors from the Preparatory
Team. The five-day visit featured an overview of the school, observation of classes and discussions with members of the IC
community. An Accreditation Workshop was also conducted for the school’s administration, faculty and staff involving self-study
exercises. IC is accredited by two prominent international organizations, the Council of International Schools (CIS) and the New
England Association for Schools and Colleges (NEASC). Accreditation was granted to IC in 1997 following a comprehensive Self-
Study that the school conducted and a visit by a team of over thirty international educators.
USAID Trains Local Community on Water Treatment
In partnership with Mercy Corps and El-Ard under its environmental portfolio, USAID funded a two-day training session in Ebl Es-Saqi
in South Lebanon. The training session targeted the support committees and municipalities that benefit from the USAID-funded
domestic wastewater treatment plants of Hasbaya and Rihane, as well as the olive oil residue treatment plant of Qenia. 25 technical
and management committee members of the three selected villages, including two women, benefited from the training. Sessions
covered topics such as operation and maintenance, monitoring, record keeping, environmental management plan, public health and
safety, re-use of treated wastewater in irrigation, re-use of treated sludge, management and coordination and other relevant subjects.
Cooperative Distributes Christmas Gifts to Children of Landmine Survivors
On the occasion of the holiday season, the Executive Board of the Jezzine Development Cooperative – funded through USAID’s
landmine and war victims’ assistance project – visited the homes of 156 survivors that directly benefit from the project in Jezzine in
South Lebanon. Over a period of four days, board members of the cooperative distributed greeting cards, candies and gifts to 110
children of the survivors. The purpose of the activity was to strengthen the ties between the cooperative and the beneficiaries.
USAID Sponsors Tourism Network in Hasbaya-Marjayoun
In partnership with Mercy Corps under the tourism portfolio, USAID is promoting rural tourism in the Hasbaya-Marjayoun area in South
Lebanon. With the establishment of a Regional Tourism Network in the area, the project ensures local participation in policy and
decision-making. The network consists of an eight-member tourism committee, of which three are women and groups the following
six villages: Khiam, Marjayoun, Ibel Es-Saqi, Chebaa, Hebbariyeh and Hasbaya. The network was formed by the participants at the
end of a series of sustainable tourism training sessions that were held back in September-October 2005. The committee is actively
seeking collaboration for future tourism activities in the area.
